The Pirates retained the championship of the East division by killing off the last hopes of the Cardinals, 5-1. Bob Gibson, who pitched a no-hitter August 14 in his only previous start against the Pirates this season, was the loser on four unearned runs.

A passed ball and an error helped the Pirates notch their initial run in the first inning. A walk to Willie Stargell and singles by Bob Robertson and Manny Sanguillen produced an earned run in the fourth, but a throwing error by Ted Kubiak tainted the Pirates' last three counters in the eighth.
