The Orioles became only the second club in major league history to have four 20-game winners in one season when Jim Palmer pitched a three-hitter and beat the Indians, 5-0. Palmer joined teammates Mike Cuellar, Pat Dobson and Dave McNally in the charmed circle. The White Sox of 1920 had a 20-game quartet in Urban Faber, Claude Williams, Ed Cicotte and Dickie Kerr. Palmer and Alan Foster engaged in a scoreless duel, with the Orioles being held hitless untilthe seventh inning when the division champions erupted for three runs on a single by Merv Rettenmund, double by Elrod Hendricks, intentional pass to Davey Johnson with one out, sacrifice fly by Mark Belanger, double by Palmer and a wild pitch. Brooks Robinson singled home the final two runs in the eighth. [The Sporting News] |
