Nate Colbert clouted a homer with two men on base in the 10th inning to give the Padres a 4-1 victory over the Giants, who were assured, nevertheless, of at least a tie for the West division title when the Dodgers lost to to the Astros. The Padres took a 1-0 lead against John Cumberland in the second inning when Ollie Brown singled, took third on a single by Garry Jestadt and scored on an infield out by Bob Barton.

Clay Kirby, who hurled the route for the Padres, gave up the tying tally in the seventh. Ken Henderson led off with a single and Tito Fuentes sacrificed. After a strikeout of Willie Mays and intentional pass to Willie McCovey, Dave Kingman singled to drive in Henderson. Jerry Johnson was on the mound in relief for the Giants in the 10th when Tommy Dean singled and was forced by Don Mason. Johnny Jeter grounded to Chris Speier, but Fuentes dropped the throw to second and both Mason and Jeter were safe. Colbert then smashed his game-winning homer. [The Sporting News]
