The Pirates headed into the N. L. championship series against the Giants after ending thr regular season with a 4-3 victory over the Phillies. Manny Sanguillen hit a homer for the Pirates in the third inning to tie the score at 1-1, but Willie Montanez put the Phillies ahead again with a two-run smash in the home half. The homer was the 30th of the season for Montanez, setting a Phillies' club record for a rookie player.

The Pirates came back to decide the game with three runs in the fourth. Roberto Clemente singled, took third on a single by Willie Stargell and scored on a sacrifice fly by Al Oliver. Vic Davalilllo singled and, after Sanguillen went out, Jackie Hernandez drove in the tying and winning runs with a double. [The Sporting News]
