. . . where the 1970s live forever!

The Giants won the West division title by one game over the Dodgers when Juan Marichal pitched a five-hitter and beat the Padres, 5-1. The Giants began nailing down their victory in the fourth inning when Tito Fuentes singled, Willie Mays drove him in with a double and Dave Kingman smashed a two-run homer off Dave Roberts. Marichal dropped a throw while covering first base on a grounder by Ollie Brown to lead to the Padres' run in the fifth. Brown took second on an infield out by Larry Stahl and scored on a single by Bob Barton.

The Giants iced their championship champagne with their last two runs in the ninth. Chris Speier doubled and scored on another two-bagger by Ken Henderson. After taking third on a long fly by Fuentes, Henderson was waved home with the final run when Al Severinsen balked with Mays at bat. [The Sporting News]
