Ken Holtzman, a winter acquisition from the Cubs, pitched a five-hit shutout as the Athletics swept a twi-night doubleheader from the Royals, 4-0 and 3-1. In Holtzman's victory, the A's scored all their runs in the fourth inning on consecutive singles by Joe Rudi, Reggie Jackson, Sal Bando, Mike Epstein and Bobby Brooks, plus a wild pitch.

Bob Locker was the winner of the nightcap in relief when the A's broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the eighth on a triple by Rudi, single by Jackson, pass to Bando and single by Epstein. [The Sporting News]
