Willie Stargell, who led the major leagues in homers with 48 last year, found the range for the first time this season to help the Pirates defeat the Cubs, 7-5. After Stargell's homer in the seventh inning, the Pirates added two more runs to take a 7-3 lead on two walks, singles by Manny Sanguillen and Gene Alley and a sacrifice fly by Dave Cash.

The Cubs rallied against Dock Ellis in the ninth and scored twice on two walks and a double by Don Kessinger before Dave Giusti arrived to put out the fire. [The Sporting News]
