Willie Mays and Bobby Bonds each drove in a run in the fifth inning to enable the Giants to defeat the Padres, 2-1. Chris Speier opened the stanza with a single and counted on a double by Mays. After an infield out by Tito Fuentes and pass to Ken Henderson, Bonds singled to score Mays.

Sam McDowell, who started for the Giants, left after five innings for a pinch-hitter, but received credit for his second victory. Nate Colbert homered off Jim Barr for the Padres' run. [The Sporting News]
