Burt Hooton, the Cubs' rookie righthander who pitched a no-hitter against the Phillies April 16, ran into a tough competitor in Tom Seaver and lost to the Mets, 2-0. Hooton's hope for a second consecutive no-hitter was spoiled quickly by Bud Harrelson, who doubled as the leadoff man for the Mets in the first inning.

The Mets scored their runs in the fifth. Ed Kranepool singled and, after a sacrifice by Jerry Grote, scored on a single by Harrelson, who took second on the throw to the plate. Ken Boswell singled to drive in Harrelson. [The Sporting News]
