. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Rusty Staub, Jim Fregosi and Jim Beauchamp, all newcomers to the Mets, played key roles in an 8-2 and 7-6 sweep of a doubleheader with the Cubs, the second game going 12 innings. Staub collected six hits in nine trips. In the lidlifter, with the Cubs leading, 2-1, Staub singled in the sixth inning and Cleon Jones and Jim Fregosi followed with back-to-back homers. Fregosi's blow was his first in the N. L. Jon Matlack, who pitched the last four innings in relief for the Mets and allowed only one hit, received credit for his first major league victory.

In the nightcap, Tommie Agee singled in the 12th and took third on a single by Staub. After Jones forced Staub, Fregosi drew an intentional walk to load the bases. Beauchamp then batted for Ed Kranepool in his first appearance with the Mets and singled to drive in the winning run. [The Sporting News]
