The Pirates' strategy in issuing two intentional passes in the third inning went awry when the Braves erupted for four runs to take charge in a 9-5 victory. With the score tied, 1-1, Ralph Garr singled for the Braves and scored on a double by Rico Carty.

The Pirates then walked Earl Williams to get at Dusty Baker, who was batting only .043, but Baker upset the move with a double to drive in Carty. The Pirates then also passed Paul Casanova and their strategy again went wrong when Marty Perez singled to drive in two runs. [The Sporting News]
