The longest game in the major leagues so far this season ended after 16 innings with the Indians defeating the Royals, 5-3, in the opener of a scheduled doubleheader. The second game was rained out.

Fred Stanley led off the 16th with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice by Del Unser, took third on a passed ball by Ed Kirkpatrick and scored the tie-breaking run on a sacrifice fly by Jack Brohamer. Adolfo Phillips walked and advanced to third on a single by Graig Nettles. When Kirkpatrick threw the ball into center field on a stolen base by Nettles, Phillips scored the extra run.
