The Giants scored their run on a freak homer by Chris Speier, who hit a drive that glanced off center fielder Tommie Agee's glove and popped over the fence in the sixth inning.

While the crowd of 44,271 chanted for Mays, the Mets sent up John Milner as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning. Milner walked, took second on an infield out and scored the tying run on a double by Ken Boswell.
