A throwing error by Duane Josephson with the bases loaded in the ninth inning enabled the Athletics to defeat the Red Sox, 6-5. Josephson had tied the score at 5-5 with a two-run homer in the eighth, but after the A's filled the sacks in the ninth, the catcher-turned-first baseman fielded a tap by Sal Bando and threw badly to the plate, allowing pinch-runner Blue Moon Odom to score for the A's.
