After walking three straight times, Dick McAuliffe smashed a two-run homer in the eighth inning to provide the Tigers with a 3-2 victory in the opener of a doubleheader, but the Royals ended a five-game losing streak by winning the nightcap, 8-4. Willie Horton also homered for the Tigers in the lidlifter to account for their first run.

The Royals trailed in the second game, 4-2, going into the fifth inning when Freddie Patek walked, Amos Otis singled and Richie Scheinblum hit his first major league homer since whacking one while with the Indians July 20, 1969. [The Sporting News]
