Playing his first game with the Mets, Willie Mays homered against his former teammates in the fifth inning to beat the Giants, 5-4. Mays, who batted in the leadoff spot, walked in the first inning and, after two more passes loaded the bases, Rusty Staub hit a grand-slam homer off Sam McDowell. The Giants came back to tie the score in the fifth with a walk, triple by Bernie Williams, double by Chris Speier and homer by Tito Fuentes, but Mays then earned a thunderous ovation from the crowd of 35,505 with his game-winning blow off Don Carrithers in the Mets' half.
