Jose Cardenal, who hit a homer in the second inning, also drove in the Cubs' winning run with a single in the ninth to defeat the Phillies, 3-2. Carmen Fanzone homered for the Cubs' other run, while Tommy Hutton hit the first of his major league career for the Phillies.

In the ninth, Billy Williams doubled and stopped at third on an infield hit by Jim Hickman. Williams was out at the plate, trying to score on a grounder by Fanzone, but Cardenal singled to drive in Hickman. [The Sporting News]
