. . . where the 1970s live forever!

The rampaging Mets extended their winning streak to 10 games by sweeping a twi-night doubleheader with the Phillies, 3-1 and 2-1. Jon Matlack, Willie Mays and Tommie Agee were the heroes of the triumph in the opener. A single by Jerry Grote, sacrifice by Matlack and double by Mays produced the Mets' initial run in the third inning, Mays' RBI was the 1,861st of his career, moving him into third place on the N. L.'s all-time list. Matlack, who pitched a five-hitter, doubled with one out in the eighth. Mays was handed an intentional pass. After Bud Harrelson flied out, Agee doubled to drive in Matlack and Mays for the winning margin.

Jerry Koosman was the winner of the nightcap in relief of Ray Sadecki. The Mets scored their first run in the second inning on a double by Rusty Staub and single by Ed Kranepool. Wayne Garrett walked in the fourth and counted what proved to be the deciding run on singles by Kranepool and Sadecki. The Phillies forced the exit of Sadecki in the fifth when Larry Bowa doubled and Terry Harmon singled. Koosman relieved and emerged at the expense of only one run on a sacrifice fly by Willie Montanez. Tug McGraw took over in the ninth and saved the game after Koosman had walked Bowa.
