Making his eighth try, Gary Nolan turned in his first complete game of the season and pitched the Reds to a 7-2 victory in the opener of a doubleheader, but the Padres won the nightcap, 7-0, behind Fred Norman, who posted his third straight shutout. Darrel Chaney drove in three of the Reds' runs in the first game on a walk with the bases loaded and a single.

Norman held the Reds to five hits in the second game, three of them by Pete Rose. The Padres attack included seven doubles, two each by Ed Spiezio, Nate Colbert and Jerry Morales and one by Enzo Hernandez. Spiezio batted in three runs and Colbert accounted for two RBIs. [The Sporting News]
