The Mets were stopped on their 11-game winning streak when they were checked by Fergie Jenkins and lost to the Cubs, 2-1. The Cubs scored their first run off Gary Gentry in the fourth inning on a walk to Jim Hickman and singles by Paul Popovich and Ken Rudolph.

A pass to Bud Harrelson, sacrifice by Ken Boswell and single by Rusty Staub produced the tying run for the Mets in the seventh, but the Cubs beat reliever Tug McGraw in the eighth when Hickman singled and Popovich doubled. [The Sporting News]
