While Burt Hooton pitched a five-hitter, Jose Cardenal smashed two homers for the Cubs and Billy Williams hit one to beat the Mets, 5-1. Cardenal connected for the circuit after a pass to Hooton in the third inning and duplicated that blow following a walk to Ken Rudolph in the fifth.

After two outs in the fifth, Williams added his round-tripper. Willie Mays had two hits for the Mets in three official trips and scored their run on a double by Bud Harrelson in the eighth inning. [The Sporting News]
