The Pirates erupted for five runs in the 14th inning to defeat the Cardinals, 9-4, in a three hour, 58-minute marathon. Richie Hebner walked, took third on a single by Manny Sanguillen and scored the tie-break-ing run when Joe Torre drew an error throwing to the plate on a grounder by Gene Alley.

Dave Cash followed with a single, scoring Sanguillen and Alley. After a single by Roberto Clemente and pass to Willie Stargell loaded the bases, Al Oliver batted in the last two tallies with a single. [The Sporting News]
