Willie Mays came through with his third game-winning hit since joining the Mets when the 41-year-old superstar drove in Wayne Garrett with a two-out single in the 14th inning to beat the Cubs, 3-2. Garrett singled and Jim Beauchamp drew a pass as a pinch-hitter for Tug McGraw before Wondrous Willie came to the plate.

Carmen Fanzone batted in the Cubs' runs with a double in the sixth inning. After Duffy Dyer cut the deficit with a homer in the eighth, the Mets tied the score in the ninth when Rusty Staub doubled and Cleon Jones singled for his first hit in 19 at bats. [The Sporting News]
