The Cardinals, who took advantage of Tom Seaver's wildness, scored three runs in the first inning and later added three more on two homers to defeat the Mets, 6-2. The victory was the Cards' first over Seaver since September 11, 1970, after four straight losses to the Mets' ace last season.

A walk to Ted Sizemore, single by Matty Alou and forceout by Joe Torre produced the Cardinals' initial run. After two more passes loaded the bases, Luis Melendez drove in two runs with a single. Torre homered in the fifth and doubled ahead of another homer by Ted Simmons in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
