A safe squeeze bunt by Ed Brinkman proved the most important maneuver by the Tigers in gaining a 2-1 victory over the Yankees. With one out in the fifth inning, Mickey Stanley walked and raced to third on a wild pitch by Mel Stottlemyre. Brinkman then laid down his bunt to score Stanley. After a sacrifice by Joe Coleman, Brinkman scored what proved to be the winning run on a single by Dick McAuliffe.
