Rich Hand yielded only three hits in 8 1/3 innings and gained his first victory of the season when the Rangers defeated the Athletics, 3-2. Hand was lifted after Sal Bando singled in the ninth. Gene Tenace also singled off reliever Paul Lindblad, but Horacio Pina came in and retired George Hendrick and Dave Duncan to end the game.

The Rangers, in stopping the A's on their five-game winning streak, scored the deciding run in the eighth inning. Ken Suarez singled and gave way on the paths to Dave Nelson, who took second on a sacrifice by Hand, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Toby Harrah. [The Sporting News]
