An error by catcher Bob Barton, who dropped a throw to the plate, enabled Jose Cardenal to score for the Cubs in the 10th inning to defeat the Padres. 2-1. Jim Hickman walked in the overtime frame and was forced on Cardenal's attempted sacrifice. After Paul Popovich fouled out, Cardenal stole second.

Ken Rudolph followed with a single to left field. Jerry Morales made a perfect throw to the plate in time to catch Cardenal, but Barton bobbled the ball. [The Sporting News]
