The Giants' decision to pitch to Ted Simmons with first base open backfired when the Cardinals' catcher knocked in two runs with a double in the eighth inning to produce a 5-3 victory. With one away, Ted Sizemore walked and Matty Alou singled. Joe Torre grounded out, moving the runners to second and third.

The Giants then elected to pitch to Simmons. After hitting his double, Simmons also scored on a single by Bernie Carbo. [The Sporting News]
