In two decidedly contrasting games, the Pirates slugged their way to a 12-5 victory over the Padres in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader and then won the nightcap, 1-0, when Gene Alley drew a walk from Mike Corkins with the bases loaded in the 18th inning. The Pirates piled up 20 hits in the first game, including two homers by Willie Stargell and one by Dave Cash. Stargell batted in five runs. Nate Colbert and Jerry Morales homered for the Padres.

In the second game, Al Oliver and Stargell beat out infield hits in the 18th and worked a double steal as Richie Hebner struck out. After Bill Mazeroski walked to load the bases, Alley drew the pass that decided the marathon. Dave Roberts, the Padres' No. 1 choice in the free agent draft, made his debut and went hitless in three trips. [The Sporting News]
