Diego Segui, reporting from the Athletics, was rushed into action on his first day in a St. Louis uniform and gained a victory in relief when the Cardinals exploded for five runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Giants, 6-4. Sam McDowell, who helped himself to a 4-1 lead with a two-run triple, faltered in the eighth and loaded the bases on a single by Ted Sizemore and two walks.

Ted Simmons hit a sinking line drive to center field, where the ball got past Garry Maddox for a three-run triple. After Don McMahon replaced McDowell, Donn Clendenon smashed a homer for the Cards' winning runs. [The Sporting News]
