. . . where the 1970s live forever!
Don Sutton, who had won eight straight games this year and 12 in a row over two seasons, was stopped on his streak when the Pirates scored five runs in the first inning to defeat the Dodgers, 5-1. Only two of the Pirates' runs were earned.

After leadoff man Rennie Stennett was safe on a wild throw by Bobby Valentine, Vic Davailllo, Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell and Al Oliver hit singles as three runs scored. Richie Hebner struck out, but Manny Sanguillen was safe on an error by Steve Garvey to load the bases. Jackie Hernandez then grounded to Bill Russell, who stepped on second for a forceout but threw wildly to first, allowing the final two Pirates to cross the plate. Frank Robinson hit a homer off Steve Blass for the Dodgers' run. [The Sporting News]
