A three-run outburst in the ninth inning on homers by Rick Monday and Ron Santo carried the Cubs to a 4-2 victory over the Giants, who went down to their seventh straight defeat. Bobby Bonds homered with a man on base for the Giants in the third.

The Cubs picked up a run in the fifth but trailed going into the ninth when Carmen Fanzone walked and Monday turned the game around with his homer. Santo added an insurance run with his first clout since May 2. [The Sporting News]
