Ted Simmons hit his second grand-slam homer of the season to power the Cardinals to a 5-2 victory over the Padres. Mike Caldwell, making his first major league start for the Padres, was the victim of the smash in the third inning, but all four runs were unearned.

Al Santorini and Lou Brock opened the stanza with singles. Matty Alou grounded to Nate Colbert, who tagged first base and threw to second for an attempted double play, but Enzo Hernandez dropped the ball. Donn Clendenon struck out.
