Bill Freehan homered on the first pitch thrown by Ken Holtzman in the ninth inning to give the Tigers a 3-2 victory over the Athletics, who were stopped on their eight-game winning streak. Holtzman walked Freehan with the bases loaded to force in the Tigers' first run in the third inning.

Dave Duncan homered for the Athletics in the fifth and Joe Coleman, duplicating Holtzman's loss of control, walked Joe Rudi with the bases loaded to force in the A's second run. The Tigers tied the score in the eighth on a triple by Aurelio Rodriguez and sacrifice fly by Tony Taylor. [The Sporting News]
