The Royals, who were held scoreless on three hits in the first eight innings, erupted for four runs in the ninth to defeat the Red Sox, 4-2. John Mayberry opened the rally with a double. Paul Schaal walked and Jerry May singled to load the bases. Freddie Patek doubled, driving in two runs to the tie score and Amos Otis followed with a single to knock in the winning pair.
