After falling behind by three runs at the outset, the Reds swept over the Phillies in a twi-night doubleheader, 8-4 and 4-2. The Phillies knocked out Jim McGlothlin while taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the opener, but Tom Hall and Clay Carroll yielded only four hits between them the rest of the way. Denis Menke started the Reds on the way to victory with a two-run single in the second. Johnny Bench homered in the sixth to tie the score at 4-4. Menke then batted a run home with a triple in the seventh and scored himself on a sacrifice fly by Dave Concepcion as the Reds went ahead to stay.

In the nightcap, George Foster homered for the Reds and Tony Perez batted in two runs with a triple. The Phillies' pair came on round-trippers by Greg Luzinski and Roger Freed in the eighth inning. [The Sporting News]
