After blowing the two previous games, the Mets gained an 8-3 victory to salvage the finale of a series with the Braves. Willie Mays hit a single and double, scoring one run and driving in another for the Mets. Hank Aaron smashed his 651st homer for the Braves and Dusty Baker also hit for the circuit.

The Braves, who had rallied in the eighth inning in the two previous games, threatened again in that same stanza, but they were checked by Tug McGraw, in relief of Jon Matlack, after Earl Williams drove in a run with a single. The Mets then iced their victory with four runs in the ninth. Cleon Jones batted in one with a single for his third hit and second RBI of the game and Duffy Dyer followed with a three-run homer.
