Coming back after Cito Gaston hit a grand-slam homer for the Padres, the Cubs exploded for six runs in the sixth inning to gain a 12-9 victory. Billy Williams and Jose Cardenal hit homers to help the Cubs to a 6-2 lead. After Curt Blefary and Larry Stahl singled off Fergie Jenkins in the sixth, a thunderstorm delayed the game for 33 minutes. When play resumed, Pat Corrales walked to load the bases and Gaston delivered his slam as a pinch-hitter for Enzo Hernandez.

The Cubs struck back in their half with the tie-breaking run on singles by Don Kessinger and Williams and a double by Jim Hickman. Following a pass to Carmen Fanzone, Rick Monday batted in two runs with a double and Ron Santo climaxed the outburst with a three-run homer.
