Sam McDowell yielded just five hits and pitched the Giants to a 3-1 victory to become only the second lefthander to beat the Pirates this season and first to do it in a route-going performance. Claude Osteen of the Dodgers also won over the Pirates previously but needed assistance.

The Giants staked McDowell to a lead with two runs in the third inning on singles by Tito Fuentes, Bobby Bonds and Chris Speier and an error by Jose Pagan. McDowell pitched out of a jam in the fourth after giving up the Pirates' tally and the Giants then added an insurance run in the seventh on singles by Dave Rader and Garry Maddox and a sacrifice fly by Fuentes.
