Wilbur Wood gained his 11th victory of the season when the White Sox won the first game of a day-night doubleheader, 5-4, but the Red Sox rallied to triumph in the second game, 10-8. Bill Melton homered with two men on base for the White Sox in the first inning of the sunshine contest, but Wood then fell behind, 4-3, but his teammates rallied to score two runs in the sixth. After Carlos May and Melton walked and Rick Reichardt singled to load the bases, Walt Williams drew a pass to force in May. Melton followed across the plate with the deciding run as Rich Morales rolled into a double play.

In the night game, the White Sox exploded for six runs in the third inning, three scoring on a homer by Ed Herrmann, to take a 7-3 lead. The Red Sox cut the deficit and then gained their victory with three runs in the eighth. Duane Josephson batted in the tying tally with a triple and scored the go-ahead run on a single by Phil Gagliano.
