Saved from defeat by pinch-hitter Jim Breazeale in the ninth inning, the Braves scored a run in the 10th to defeat the Expos, 3-2. Tim McCarver hit his first homer since being acquired by the Expos in the first inning and another run scored when catcher's interference was called against Earl Williams with the bases loaded in the fourth.

However, Breazeale came through for the Braves with a two-run homer in the ninth to tie the score. In the 10th, after a single by Ralph Garr and a passed ball, the Expos walked Hank Aaron intentionally, but the move failed when Rico Carty singled to drive in the Braves' winning run.
