The terrific relief pitching of Sparky Lyle enabled the Yankees to complete a sweep of a doubleheader with the 3-2 victory over the Rangers after Steve Kline won the first game, 2-0. Bernie Allen, who hit a double and single, scored both Yankee runs in the lidlifter, crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly by Horace Clarke in the fourth inning and on a perfect squeeze bunt by Kline in the sixth.

In the nightcap, John Ellis drove in the Yankees' deciding run with a single in the fifth inning. Mel Stottlemyre faltered in the ninth and was removed with runners on second and third and none out. Lyle issued an intentional pass to Frank Howard and then struck out the next three straight batters on a total of only 10 pitches. [The Sporting News]
