Stopped by a cutoff play, the Orioles' nine-game winning streak came to an end with a 4-3 loss to the Twins. Harmon Killebrew drove in two runs with a pair of singles to pace the Twins to a 4-1 lead before the Orioles began their rally with a run in the eighth on a pass to Johnny Oates, single by Boog Powell and double by Brooks Robinson with one out.

With pinch-runners Chico Salmon and Dave Leonhard on base, Terry Crowley singled, scoring Salmon, Leonhard stopping at third. Crowley tried to take second, but Rich Reese cut off the throw from the outfield and fired to Danny Thompson, who tagged Crowley out. Davey Johnson then flied out to end the inning.
