The Brewers collected only six hits off Marty Pattin, their former teammate, and lost the opener of a doubleheader, 8-1, but Earl Stephenson and Ken Sanders combined to shut out the Red Sox in the nightcap, 2-0. The Red Sox took a 3-1 lead in the lidlifter with two unearned runs in the fourth inning and wrapped up the decision with a five-run outburst in the seventh, three scoring on a homer by Reggie Smith.

Stephenson, making his first major league start, was the winner of the second game with help from Sanders, who pitched the last two innings. Lynn McGlothen, making his major league debut with the Red Sox, was the loser. Johnny Briggs doubled for the Brewers in the seventh, took third after a long fly by Dave May and scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Lahoud.
