Manny Sanguillen hit the first grand-slam homer of his major league career to spark the Pirates to a 9-2 victory over the Cubs. The Pirates were losing, 2-1, with two out in the eighth inning when Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell singled to chase Burt Hooton.

Dan McGinn walked Al Oliver to load the bases and after Tom Phoebus took over for the Cubs, Sanguillen smashed his grand slam. The Pirates added four more runs in the ninth to clinch the victory for Dock Ellis. [The Sporting News]
