Dave Hamilton doubled for his first major league hit and Rollie Fingers homered for his first hit of the season to go along with their pitching as the Athletics defeated the Rangers, 9-3. With the score tied, 1-1, Hamilton doubled in the sixth inning, Joe Rudi walked and Reggie Jackson was safe on an error. After Blue Moon Odom came in to run for Hamilton, Sal Bando drove in two runs with a single. Fingers, who then replaced Hamilton on the mound, smashed his homer with a man on base in the seventh.

The game started at 5 p.m. in 103-degree heat and drew only 3,884, the smallest crowd since the former Senators moved to Texas this year. [The Sporting News]
