The Cardinals caught up with Burt Hooton in the sixth inning and scored four runs, two of them unearned on an error by Ron Santo, to defeat the Cubs, 4-2. Rick Wise, helping himself to the victory, set off the Cards' uprising with a single, stopped at third on a double by Lou Brock and scored on an infield out by Ed Crosby.

After Matty Alou fouled out, Joe Torre singled to score Brock. Ted Simmons followed with another single. Jose Cruz then grounded to Santo, who threw wildly to first, Torre scoring. Bernie Carbo added a single to plate Simmons with an insurance run. [The Sporting News]
