A dramatic catch by Jim Northrup, who robbed Davey Johnson of a homer with a man on base in the ninth inning, enabled Mickey Lolich to gain his 13th victory as the Tigers defeated the Orioles, 2-0. Al Kaline homered for the Tigers' first run off Dave McNally in the sixth inning and a walk, single by Bill Freehan and an error added the other tally off Doyle Alexander in the eighth.

With one out in the ninth, Brooks Robinson drew the only pass issued by Lolich. Northrup then leaped against the fence to pull down Johnson's bid for a homer and completed the double play with his throw to Ed Brinkman and relay to Paul Jata. [The Sporting News]
