Roberto Clemente, who had not hit more than one homer in any game since August 13, 1969, smashed two for the circuit, his second drive coming after a pinch-single by Milt May in the ninth inning to give the Pirates a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. Clemente connected for his first homer in the seventh.

Willie Stargell followed with a single and gave way on the paths to Gene Clines, who stole second, moved to third after a fly by Al Oliver and scored on a sacrifice fly by Manny Sanguillen. Billy Williams, who doubled to drive in the Cubs' first run in the third inning, accounted for their other pair with a homer in the eighth, but Fergie Jenkins gave up May's single in the ninth and then was the victim of Clemente's second homer.
