Nolan Ryan struck out 16, allowed only five hits and pitched the Angels to a 5-3 victory over the Athletics with the aid of homers by Ken Berry and Leo Cardenas. Ryan drove in a run with a single in the third inning to tie the score at 1-1.

Berry broke the deadlock with his circuit clout to open the third. Cardenas then came up with two men on base and two out and smashed the winning homer. [The Sporting News]
